Chen Yaozi loved archery (射箭) very much. He was pretty good at it.
One day he was practicing in his own field, and eight or nine times out of ten he hit the target. He was quite happy.
Looking around, he found an old man. The old man sold oil (油). And the old man only nodded and was not amazed. That made him very angry. He called the old man to come over and asked him, “Do you also know archery? Am I not wonderful?” The old man took out a gourd (葫芦) and placed it on the ground (地面). He covered the opening of the gourd with a copper coin (铜币). And then he began to pour some oil into the gourd through the hole in the coin. After that, the coin was still dry and clean. The old man said to Chen Yaozi, “This is only practice makes perfect (熟能生巧), nothing so wonderful.” Chen Yaozi laughed and sent him away.
