The father of a British teenager has successfully taken his son back from the Islamic State in Iraq after travelling to Syria.

Karim Mohammadi journeyed from his home in Cardiff to the war torn country after discovering that his son, Ahmed, 19, had joined up with a group of British jihadists. Ahmed, a civil engineering student, is thought to have been with friends from Cardiff, including Reyaad Khan, 21, and Naseer Muthana, 20, who appeared in a video, urging other young British Muslims to join up.

His father said he had initially travelled to Turkey as part of a humanitarian and aid mission and had not taken part in any fighting in the region. But he decided to go on the dangerous journey himself after becoming concerned that he was being influenced by other jihadists from the UK. After crossing the border from Turkey into Syria, Mr Mohammadi managed to find his son and persuade him to return home to Britain.

It is thought to be the first time a Briton has been rescued by their family from the conflict in the region. There is no British government representation in Syria to assist those who become trapped in the region and wish to return home.

An intelligence source told The Sunday Times an increasing number of parents were risking their own lives to bring their children home from the region. The source said: “Parents know that the British government are helpless in helping them bring back their children. So we expect that more parents are going to take the dangerous journey of tracking their children and attempt to bring them back home.”
